HEATING ADVICE · BRUSSELS

A 100, 150 or 200-litre hot water cylinder should not be selected solely by counting occupants. Shower flow, baths, intervals between uses and reheating speed also determine comfort. Here is a practical way to compare capacities for your Brussels home without choosing an unnecessarily large store.

Start with the busiest period of the day
Describe an ordinary morning: how many showers follow one another, how long do they last, and does someone use the kitchen at the same time? A household that spreads its demand throughout the day has a different storage requirement from one that concentrates everything into twenty minutes.
Two eight-minute showers at eight litres per minute use 128 litres of mixed water. That does not mean you need exactly 128 litres of storage. Mixing with cold water and reheating during use change the balance. This example describes demand; it does not specify an appliance.
Understand stored volume and V40
Nominal capacity describes the volume stored in the cylinder. V40 expresses an available quantity of water at 40 °C under defined test conditions. Two appliances with the same capacity can therefore provide different service. Compare technical sheets and measurement conditions, not just the number on the tank.
Reheating time is equally important. An electric element, a boiler-fed heat exchanger and a heat pump do not necessarily replenish the store at the same rate. Check normal operation and any supplementary heater. Storage temperature must follow manufacturer instructions and the requirements for sanitary protection.

100, 150 or 200 litres: options rather than a fixed rule
A 100-litre model may be considered for modest demand and limited space. A 150-litre cylinder provides an intermediate store. A 200-litre option deserves comparison when draw-offs are substantial or closely spaced. None of these categories guarantees a fixed number of showers on its own.
A high-flow shower, a bath or slow reheating can change the choice. Increasing storage does not correct poor pressure or a faulty mixer. If comfort has declined recently, an installation diagnosis is useful before purchasing a larger cylinder.
Check the location and running costs
Measure height, width, doorways and the route along the staircase. Allow access to components requiring maintenance. The floor or wall must support the filled weight; free space alone does not confirm suitability. Connections, domestic water protection and drainage are also part of the project.
A cylinder loses heat even when no tap is running. Insulation, location and pipework influence those losses. A larger store may provide a useful reserve, but compare the comfort obtained with the complete installation cost and actual use.
Compare quotations on the same basis
For your heating and hot water project in Brussels, provide shower times, bath type, the existing appliance reference and available dimensions. Ask about volume, V40 where stated, recovery time and the conditions behind each figure.
The quotation should explain adaptations and commissioning. In a house in Jette or a flat in Anderlecht, a coherent choice brings together storage, the heat source and distribution to the taps. These three elements need to be assessed together.
Frequently asked questions
Will 200 litres always suit four people?
No. Flow, duration and reheating time can significantly change the requirement. Compare a concrete household scenario.
Is V40 the same as cylinder volume?
No. It describes an available quantity of water at 40 °C under specified conditions, whereas nominal capacity describes storage.
Must a cylinder be replaced whenever hot water runs out?
Not necessarily. A heating, control or distribution fault can explain a recent decline. Have the cause identified first.
