Hybrid heating combines a heat pump and a boiler in one coordinated installation. The aim is to use each source when its operation suits the home. Before adding a heat pump to an existing Bulex boiler, assess the building’s demand, the radiators and the compatibility of the controls.

How the two heat sources work together

The heat pump can cover a substantial part of the demand when conditions are suitable. The boiler can add capacity or take over, depending on the design and settings. Suitable controls coordinate their operation; two independent appliances do not automatically make a well-designed hybrid system.

There is no universal outdoor temperature at which every installation switches over. The strategy may account for demand, expected performance and entered economic parameters. The installer should explain the proposed criteria and the role of each appliance.

Check the radiators and actual heat demand

The starting point is the building’s heat requirement and the water temperature needed to meet it. Existing radiators can sometimes remain, but their dimensions and output need assessment room by room. Floor area alone does not size a hybrid system.

Improved insulation can change the required output. Circulation problems and uneven heat distribution also need identifying. Adding a second source does not automatically correct a poorly balanced circuit. The assessment therefore connects heat generation, distribution and emitters.

Confirm the Bulex boiler’s compatibility

The Bulex name alone does not guarantee compatibility with any heat pump. The reference, age, condition and communication options matter. Controls, accessories and the manufacturer’s intended hydraulic arrangement need validation.

Domestic hot water should be explained separately. Depending on the project, it may remain supplied by the boiler or use another configuration. Ask what operates in summer and what happens when space heating and hot water are requested together.

Plan the outdoor unit and compare all costs

The outdoor position needs adequate airflow, maintenance access and consideration of noise. Pipe routes, the support, electricity and drainage require assessment. Check building-specific constraints and any necessary procedural steps before ordering.

Compare investment, estimated consumption and maintenance of both appliances. Keeping gas may also preserve fixed charges. A saving stated without assumptions about use, tariffs and the building does not provide a sound comparison. One percentage cannot describe every home.

Decide within the wider renovation project

A boiler replacement assessment in Brussels can compare retaining the appliance, installing a hybrid arrangement and other suitable configurations. The benefit depends on the existing installation and planned changes to the building.

Gather the boiler reference, photos of the radiators and intended outdoor location, and consumption records. Ask for a quotation specifying the work, controls, commissioning settings and maintenance responsibilities.

Frequently asked questions

Can all the radiators stay?

Possibly, but their output at the intended operating temperatures must be checked room by room.

Is a recent boiler always compatible?

No. The exact reference, controls and permitted arrangement need checking.

Does hybrid heating eliminate gas?

Not when a gas boiler remains in use. It combines two sources; their respective shares depend on sizing and operation.
