Adding a cylinder requires an assessment of the connections.

Adding a hot water cylinder to an existing Bulex boiler may be possible, but compatibility must be checked before purchase. A heat-only boiler and a combination boiler do not necessarily offer the same options. The project involves hydraulics, controls, domestic water protection and available space. Here is how to prepare a useful assessment without assuming that every boiler can accept a cylinder.

The boiler reference determines which arrangements are possible.

Identify the boiler and the type of cylinder

Record the boiler’s full reference and find its documentation. The brand alone is insufficient. An indirect cylinder with a coil receives heat from a circuit connected to the boiler; a standalone electric water heater heats water with its own element. These solutions are not connected or controlled in the same way.

For a heat-only appliance designed to manage an external cylinder, the combination may be one of the manufacturer’s intended configurations. The Thema Condens AS range illustrates this principle. That does not automatically validate the arrangement on another Bulex boiler with an older or different design.

Check the intended controls and connections

To reheat the cylinder at the right time, the boiler must receive temperature information and control the appropriate circulation. Depending on the design, this may involve a compatible sensor, a diverter valve, a pump or a manufacturer-specified kit. The exact list depends on the manual.

With a combination boiler, adding storage should not be treated as a universal extension to the hot water outlet. The domestic hot water layout and controls must be compatible with the selected arrangement. The professional checks these points before proposing equipment and adaptations.

Checking a boiler installation
Controls and hydraulics need to work together.

Size the cylinder together with its reheating capacity

Volume must suit household use, but it must be assessed alongside the output the installation can transfer to the cylinder. The coil, operating temperatures and circulation influence reheating speed. A larger tank therefore does not, on its own, guarantee comfort between closely spaced draw-offs.

State whether showers run simultaneously, whether there is a bath and when demand peaks. An assessment of your Bulex installation can compare these needs with the retained boiler’s capabilities, instead of choosing purely by litres.

Allow for space and domestic water protection

The quotation should include cylinder location, maintenance access, pipework and insulation. The weight of the filled unit and the mounting or support conditions need assessment. Free floor space is insufficient if the equipment cannot pass through the doors or remain accessible.

The safety group, domestic water expansion control, supply pressure and drainage must be assessed for the configuration and applicable instructions. The heating circuit expansion vessel does not replace suitable domestic water protection. Temperature management must also address water hygiene and scald prevention, without improvised settings.

Keep the boiler or compare another project

Before investing in adaptations, have the boiler’s condition, history and control options examined. If it has a fault, appliance diagnosis and the cylinder addition project should be considered separately. A new reserve does not repair a faulty heat source.

In Brussels, a visit also helps check access and the home’s constraints. Ask for a quotation covering hydraulic and electrical adaptations, commissioning and operating explanations. If the arrangement is incompatible or unsuitable, a replacement assessment can compare another configuration with a clear scope.

Frequently asked questions

Can every Bulex boiler accept a cylinder?

No. The reference, design and manufacturer-approved configurations must be checked. Compatibility cannot be inferred from the brand.

Can a cylinder from another brand be installed?

The brand alone proves neither compatibility nor incompatibility. The professional must validate hydraulic characteristics, the sensor, controls and installation requirements.

Can a cylinder be added without replacing the boiler?

Yes, in certain compatible arrangements, provided the retained appliance suits the project. The assessment must confirm its condition, reheating capacity and required accessories.

Have a cylinder addition assessed in Brussels

Send the boiler’s full reference, a photo of the available space and your hot water requirements. We can prepare the compatibility check.
