HEATING ADVICE · BRUSSELS

A magnetic dirt filter can help protect your Bulex boiler from some of the particles carried by heating water. It is particularly worth considering when a new boiler is connected to an existing radiator system. However, it does not repair a fault or instantly clean the entire installation. Here is how to understand its role and prepare for an assessment in Brussels.

Why do particles appear in heating water?
In a heating circuit, the same water circulates between the boiler, pipes and radiators. Corrosion of iron-containing components can produce particles, including magnetite. Installation debris and other deposits can also enter the system. The type and amount of contamination vary from one installation to another.
Frequent topping up deserves attention: its cause should be diagnosed, because repeatedly adding water is not a lasting solution. A leak, an expansion vessel problem or another defect may be involved. Water condition, symptoms and maintenance history help a professional decide whether filtration or cleaning is appropriate.
What a magnetic filter captures, and what it cannot do
The magnet attracts ferromagnetic particles carried by the water. Depending on its design, the device may combine this with separation of non-magnetic dirt or a strainer. Check the specific product data: two accessories described as dirt filters do not necessarily work in the same way.
A heating filter is not a water softener. It does not remove limescale from your shower water and cannot clear a heavily fouled radiator on its own. Deposits trapped in an area with little circulation may never reach the filter. A system that is already affected by sludge may need suitable cleaning before additional protection is installed.

When is this protection worth considering?
Replacing a Bulex boiler on an existing circuit is a useful opportunity to assess the water and look for deposits. This avoids connecting a new appliance without considering the condition of the system it will serve. The choice must follow the boiler requirements and suit the hydraulic characteristics of the installation.
Poorly heating radiators, noises and circulation problems justify investigation, but they do not by themselves prove that sludge is present. A closed valve, trapped air, poor balancing or a faulty pump can cause similar symptoms. Identify the cause before deciding that an additional component is the answer.
Where should it go, and how is it maintained?
The return pipe before the boiler is a common location, subject to the manuals and the actual layout. Flow direction, pipe size, flow rate and pressure loss all matter. There must also be enough access to remove the magnet and carry out maintenance without dismantling furniture.
Cleaning intervals depend on the instructions, the condition of the system and the first checks after installation. An early inspection can be useful after circuit cleaning; subsequent maintenance should reflect the findings. A device full of deposits should not be left unattended for years. Ask for its inspection to be included in the agreed maintenance scope.
What should your Brussels quotation include?
Ask for the filter model, connections, any required isolation valves, pipe alterations and recommissioning to be specified. If cleaning or water treatment is proposed, the quotation should explain why, which compatible products will be used and what final checks are included. A general promise of energy savings is not a substitute for this information.
Send a clear overview photo of the pipework beneath the boiler, the Bulex model reference and the approximate number of radiators. In Jette, Anderlecht and the other Brussels municipalities, installation options depend mainly on the available space and existing pipes. If the heating is currently faulty, start with a heating system diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions
Does the filter replace a system clean?
No. It captures particles that pass through it. Separate cleaning may still be necessary when deposits are already restricting circulation.
Will it protect taps against limescale too?
Not when it is installed on the closed heating circuit. Domestic hot and cold water belong to a separate circuit and require a separate assessment.
Can I clean it myself?
That depends on the device and its instructions. Heating water may be hot and under pressure. Ask for the permitted procedure to be demonstrated and leave uncertain operations to a professional.
