HEATING ADVICE · BRUSSELS

The living room heats up quickly while an upstairs bedroom stays cool. Should you increase the temperature on your Bulex boiler? Not necessarily. Radiator balancing can help when heating water is distributed unevenly between branches. In a Brussels flat or a multi-storey house, the first step is to understand the circuit and rule out other faults before changing settings.

What does radiator balancing achieve?
Heating water flows more readily through paths with less resistance. Without suitable settings, some branches can receive excessive flow while others receive too little. Balancing distributes flow according to the emitters’ needs, taking account of pipework, valves and the circulation pump.
The aim is not to make every radiator feel identical. A large living room, a north-facing bedroom and a small hallway have different heating demands. What matters is whether each room reaches its intended temperature without overheating other rooms to compensate. The distribution should suit both the building and its use.
What should you observe before a visit?
Record which rooms are too warm or too cold, when this happens and the positions of thermostatic valves. An imbalance may be suspected if radiators near the boiler heat quickly while distant ones struggle. That pattern is not proof: a stuck valve, trapped air or deposits can cause similar symptoms.
Explain whether the problem began after a boiler replacement, renovation or additional radiator. Our guide to cold radiators helps organise these observations. If the fault persists, use contact and quotation to arrange a diagnosis. Increasing every temperature setting does not identify the underlying cause.

Thermostatic valves, return valves and the pump
A thermostatic head responds to the temperature around it and changes the valve opening. This does not automatically replace correct hydraulic balancing. Depending on the equipment, flow may be adjusted through a presettable valve, a return valve or a dedicated balancing device. Some solutions dynamically limit flow or control differential pressure.
A one-pipe system needs a different approach from a two-pipe system. The pump also affects the circuit. Arbitrarily increasing its speed may increase noise or conceal a fault without correcting distribution. Bulex boiler settings must follow the exact model’s instructions and the requirements of the heating network.
Preparing an intervention in Brussels
Prepare a list of radiators, the floors served and recent changes. Make valves and connections accessible. The heating engineer checks the network type, valve condition, temperatures and circulation conditions before deciding which adjustments are appropriate and checking the resulting operation.
In an apartment building, establish whether heating is individual or communal. Altering a shared riser can affect other homes. Contact the property manager or system operator before arranging work on a communal circuit. The quotation should clearly identify the radiators, branches and equipment included in the intervention.
Balancing, bleeding or cleaning?
Bleeding removes air. Cleaning addresses deposits. Balancing distributes water flow. These operations can complement each other, but they are not interchangeable. A blocked circuit will not be repaired simply by closing down radiators that already heat well. Read our guide to heating system cleaning to understand the distinction.
After balancing, monitor comfort through several heating cycles and keep the documented settings. Major changes to the circuit can justify a further check. No fixed saving percentage can be promised without measuring the original situation. The practical objective is a heat distribution suited to the property.
Frequently asked questions
Should all radiators be fully open every day?
No. Normal temperature settings depend on each room’s needs. Temporary conditions used during measurements are chosen by the professional and are not necessarily the normal operating settings.
Does a cooler radiator always mean poor balancing?
No. Its room may already be warm enough, its thermostatic valve may be restricting flow or another fault may exist. Room temperature and overall operation must be assessed together.
Will a new boiler automatically balance old radiators?
Replacing the heat source alone does not guarantee correct distribution through an existing network. Valves, branches and hydraulic settings also need attention.
